My approach to counselling and psychotherpay
My therapeutic approach
My role is to actively help you draw on your inner resources so that you can find a way through your problems. Sometimes just having the space to talk and to really be heard will be enough to help lead you towards clarity, other times we might need to delve a little deeper.
As an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist I am flexible in my approach and draw from a wide spectrum of psychotherapeutic knowledge. I use tools and techniques from different theories such as person-centred, psychodynamic and transpersonal to help meet your individual needs - we are unique and one size does not fit all.
About Counselling and Psychotherapy
The terminology around therapy can be confusing, the terms counselling and psychotherapy are often considered to be interchangeable therapies that overlap in some way. The difference between the two is generally around the length and depth of the therapy, which is dependent upon your needs. Whether the therapy is long or short-term we are in it together and our therapeutic relationship will be at the heart of your healing.
Counselling tends to be short-term and is helpful when dealing with specific issues, for example perhaps you are trying to handle a difficult relationship. Together we can explore your thoughts, feelings and actions, leading toward a greater awareness of any unhelpful behavioural patterns. It is this awareness that will help to bring about change.
Psychotherapy is a longer-term process which helps to identify emotional issues and their background. This is helpful if you have developed psychological problems such as anxiety or depression that may have built up over a long period of time. The aim is to help you understand how your past experiences are affecting your present life leading to a deeper awareness and affording you a greater freedom of choice in how you live your life.
